Campeche
is located in the western area of the Yucatan Peninsula. To get
here it takes a short fly from Houston, Miami, Atlanta or
Mexico City to Merida, Yucatan, were you will be received
at the Merida’s International Airport by your host Capt. Miguel.
From there, you will be driven to Campeche City (for less than a
2 hour trip). That will give us some time to put you in perspective
about fishing sites, tarpon behavior and things to do in Campeche.
Upon your arrival to the PLAZA CAMPECHE HOTEL **** you will be fascinated
being in the heart of the Historic Center, only five minutes walk
from the central plaza, where every night there are local traditions
like art expositions, regional dances, the famous dancing fountains,
the Cathedral, museums, restaurants and excellent coffee houses.
Among this colonial environment, some of the services provided by
the hotel are Cable TV, air conditioner, summing pool, business
center and restaurant.
The fishing day
usually begins early in the morning (7:00 am) having breakfast at
the hotel with sweet rolls, coffee and dishes of your preference.
Afterwards, you will be taken to the pier were you will be host
and ready to departure with locally born and raised experienced
guides who know the area by heart. Our 18 Ft HEWES REDFISHER &
MAKO 17.5'' FLAT BOATS offer a smooth ride on the calm bay of Campeche
and a great lay out for the fishing time. Enough food is packed
on the boat for mid-morning snack and lunch, with cool purified
water & soft drinks. 25 to 45 minutes from departure depending
on the fishing day the adventure starts!!!! Tarpon & Snook are
the prime species of the area, as soon as we arrive at the fishery,
the rolling of the Tarpon begins in contrast with the calm and quite
surface of the water in the channels. These fish are undisturbed
and react amazingly well to flies. Between the mangrove roots and
the "Posetas", Snook hide in the shadows of the waters
edge. The silver prints (Sabalito in spanish) are really something.
The area is quite extensive, so you will never fish in the same
spot twice. You will be fishing within 181,919 acres of marine natural
protected area call "Petenes", which are highly productive
mangrove areas nourished by fresh water upwelling where a diversity
or marine species meet. Enjoy sight fishing in 1 to 5 feet of clear
water packed with back country tarpon schools between 6 to 25 pounds
and snook hiding among 8.
The Petenes is one of the largest
reserve areas in the Yucatan Peninsula with a total of 282,858 acres
from Campeche City to the border line of Yucatan state. It was declared
a biosphere in 1996. It holds thousands of species: birds, mammals,
reptiles and more than 100 species of fish. This area is a natural
breeding area for tarpon and Snook, were they find refuge and food
for themselves and their young among the mangrove roots. Commercial
fishing is prohibited within 6 nautical miles to shore and there
is a very small sport fishing population in the local community,
one of the reasons that makes it a unique fishing destination!
